Trai to start consultation on free roaming soon

Last Updated 14 December 2012, 17:41 IST

The Telecom Regulatory Authority India (Trai) said on Friday it will soon start public consultation process for implementation of free roaming in the country.

“These are matters that are still to be decided. The question of whether national roaming should be free is a tariff related issue. It is a matter on which the Trai is competent to take a decision,” regulatory authority chairman Rahul Khullar told reporters on the sidelines of “Telecom India 2012” conclave here.  The National Telecom Policy 2012, announced by UPA II, aims to abolish roaming charges and allow mobile phone subscribers to use same number across country without having to pay extra charges for services once they are outside their telecom circle.

Separately, Telecom Secretary R Chandrashekar said the government is expecting to garner Rs 20,000 crore from the second round of spectrum auction later this fiscal.

“At this base price, we would expect approximately, I would say, somewhere around Rs 20,000 crore for all the spectrum in 1800 Mhz and 900 MHz that is put on the auction block,” he said.

He added that the same auctioneer will be used for the auctions, which is expected to be completed before fiscal-end.

The Cabinet on Thursday approved a 30 per cent cut in the reserve price for sale of mobile phone spectrum in the four zones of Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka and Rajasthan, that went unsold in the recent damp squib auction.
