Girl fails in exam, attempts 'suicide'

Conflicting reports about the incident

A first-year degree student of a private college allegedly attempted suicide on Saturday after failing in her examinations.

According to police, Vanashree, 19, (name changed), a native of Bijapur, is studying BA at Mount Carmel College in Vasanthanagar. She stays at the college hostel.

The results of the first semester examinations were announced on Friday and Vanashree had failed in Economics. The same night, she called her father at Bijapur who is said to have reprimanded her.

A senior officer at the High Grounds police station said the girl could have been traumatised and attempted to end her life by popping sleeping pills.

Doctors at the Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital, where the girl has been admitted, said she was brought to the hospital around 11.30 am and had been shifted to the intensive care unit immediately. They said she was recovering.

Vanashree’s grandfather G B Angadi said he was not sure she had swallowed sleeping pills. He said she was under treatment for some health problem and an overdose of tablets could also be a reason for it.

“There are conflicting reports about the incident - from suicide attempt to an overdose of prescribed tablets. We will record the girl’s statement before proceeding further,” said inspector Ramesh of the High Grounds police station.
