'Hasten war memorial work'

The State government, which has failed to complete the National Military Memorial works, should unveil it on the Republic Day, BJP MP Ananth Kumar said on Sunday.

Participating in the Vijay Diwas celebrations organised by the Information Technology and Communication cell of the BJP, he appealed to Home Minister R Ashoka, who was present on the occasion, to ensure completion of the project before January 26.

Further, taking a dig at the Congress party, Kumar said that though the Indian soldiers had put their lives at stake and proved their might during the wars of 1948, 1962, 1964 and 1971, the stance taken by the government of the day had not been advantageous for the nation. India had till date failed to resolve border issues with Pakistan, Bangladesh and China.

He said that if former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had not called in a cease fire during the India-Pakistan war in 1948, Indian soldiers who had already made their way up to Karachi could have fortified Islamabad, and staked claim on Kashmir, putting the matter to rest.

In the 1971 Indo-Pak war too, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had failed to cash in on the advantage India had. “Over 93,000 Pakistan soldiers had surrendered, and India was at an advantageous position to bargain with Pakistan for Kashmir,” he claimed.
