Workers from N-E yet to get wage dues

Last Updated 16 December 2012, 20:29 IST

A large number of workers from North-East have been complaining of not being paid wages by their employers, often for several months.

Naomi Leimneichong Haokip from Manipur who worked in the hospitality sector in the City said: “I have not been paid my salary for the last 3 months and don’t even have a single rupee now. If it hadn’t been for a friend who I have been staying with I don’t know where I would have gone,” she said.

Haokip’s complaint is being repeated by a section of the northeastern community in the City — cases which are being slowly compiled with the help of the NE helpline originally set up during the peak of northeastern exodus from Bangalore in August.

Haokip, who fled Bangalore in the last week of August due to the scare, returned on September 24, rejoining work two days later.

However, she claimed that she was not paid for the days she worked in August and has also been unpaid for the months of October and November when she worked full time.

According to sources, a number of those who left in a hurry during the exodus are not getting their deserved salaries even after returning to work. Helpline workers have been working hard to negotiate with respective employers regarding the payment of back wages.

At the current time, the helpline has managed to resolve 183 cases out of the 196 reported. But sources said that the helpline continues to receive similar complaints. In December, for example, four cases of nonpayment of back wages were reported.

Records also mention 47 reported cases of physical attacks during the three months, in addition to 32 cases of extortion and 34 cases of threats and intimidation.
