Students of Holenarsipur Government High School in the district have been urging their teachers to arrange for the screening of ‘Sangolli Rayanna’, taking exception to repetition of the same old cinema every year in the Children’s Film Festival.

The festival is being organised by the state government to introduce children to films that promote moral and social values. Children said they have watched ‘Baby’s Day Out’ and ‘Care of Footpath’ over the past two years, but these films have appeared on television channels umpteen number of times.

“The district administration sends 56 tickets to each class in all schools. Rs 10 has to be collected from each student for the cinema show. In some classes there are 45-50 students. It is not clear as to who will pay for the excess tickets. Children already are not willing to watch the cliched movies.

Show better movies

We have offered to bear the entire cost of Rs 560 for each class and have urged the students to go and watch the movie. However, students say they are ready to pay Rs 5 extra, if we show them a better movie,” said a teacher.

Some students had even written a letter to the vice-principal, urging him to arrange for exhibition of a better film. He replied that he cannot defy the deputy commissioner’s order.

Undeterred, the teacher even approached the managers of the designated theatres and tried to find out if there was any possibility of changing the cinema. The managers also said they have to follow the orders of the deputy commissioner.

The plight of the students in other taluks in not any better. In Arsikere, last year ‘Kotreshi Kanasu’ was screened.

This year, again ‘Kotreshi Kanasu’ has been scheduled along with ‘Kuhu, Kuhu’ in some theatres.

There is a change in Sakleshpur — last year it was ‘Makkala Sahasa’ and this year ‘Kalarava’. But, students pointed out that ‘Kalarava’ has been telecast on Chandana channel several times this year itself.

Same old films

The other regulars for the festival are ‘Jurassic Park’, Chinnari Mutha’ and ‘Chilipili Hakkigalu’.

Even as children show disinterest, teachers are forced to sell the tickets and take the students to the theatres for the exhibition.

Parents too support their children. They say we are not worried about spending Rs 10 on our child, but the children do not derive the enjoyment, they are supposed to from the festival.

All children hope now are a few new movies to watch, as the old ones screened repeatedly fails in enthusing or entertaining them.
