<p>Some of the most prominent shelter homes in the city do not have proper facilities, and are closed much before11 pm.<br /><br /></p>.<p>In a recent night vigil by ground workers, they discovered that the permanent shelter at Majnu Ka Tila was nailed shut much before 11 pm, and the other at Ganda Nalla Bazaar closed entry by 11 pm. Also, the shelter home at Kilokari is now being shut down.<br /><br />At 11 pm, two activists reached the permanent shelter at Majnu Ka Tila and tried to open the front gate, but it was locked. “We took a full circle in the hope that there would be a back door entrance, but there was no back gate,” said Mukesh, one of the activists.<br /><br /> “So we returned to the front gate and started knocking on it vigorously and a woman opened the gate. When we inspected the area we found that there was no caretaker and not a single person was sleeping in the shelter.”<br /><br />He alleged that when he tried to call the control room run by Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, nobody received the call.<br /><br />“At 11:26 pm we sent SMSes to Amod Kumar of the Mother NGO, Kishan Singh of DUSIB and Amod Kant of Prayas. We were then informed that even the shelter at Ganda Nalla Bazaar closes entry by 11 pm. How can this help the homeless when most of them work late nights or get late while reaching any shelter?” asked Indu Prakash from IGSSS.<br /><br />On December 11, some residents of the Kilokari family shelter called activists and told them that the NGO running the shelter had asked them to vacate it as it was about to close down altogether. <br /><br />“This family shelter at Kilokari was opened under the orders of the Delhi High Court in 2010. They cannot abruptly close it,” said Prakash.<br /><br />It has been a month that the shelter home at Majnu ka Tila has no electricity, despite many complaints to North Delhi Power Limited. None of the shelters have adequate number of blankets, water supply and clean toilets. <br /><br />“With winter at its peak, DUSIB should now constitute a monitoring group which will look into such issues on a regular basis,” said Prakash.<br /><br />The DUSIB officials said they are doing their best to maintain the shelters. “In any way we have given charge to NGOs who are supposed to look into the day to day affairs,” said an official.<br /></p>
