The family members of a man, who died in an accident involving a rashly driven truck in Uttar Pradesh three years ago, have been awarded Rs 62.7 lakh compensation by a motor accident claims tribunal here.

The tribunal directed New India Assurance Company Ltd, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay Rs 62,77,120 to the wife, two children and parents of deceased Jitender Singh Negi, who was 35 years old when he died.

The tribunal said the victim’s family has proved the negligence of truck driver Wali Ram. Negi’s family told the court that on the day of the accident, he and his cousin were going to work on their motorcycle.

Negi’s cousin was driving while he was riding pillion. As they crossed Hindon bridge in UP, a rashly driven truck hit them from behind, the family said. Both fell and were seriously injured. They were taken to hospital, where Negi died. His cousin was discharged after treatment.

Negi’s wife, a resident of Alipur, worked in a government department and was earning Rs 23,000 per month. The driver and owner of the truck said it was a fabricated case and they have been falsely implicated.

The tribunal said it is a lifetime trauma for the family, and no amount of money can dry their tears.
