Dearth of space, funds hits research: U R Rao

Last Updated 19 December 2012, 19:39 IST

Eminent scientist and former Isro chairperson U R Rao lamented the lack of space, funds and infrastructure to pursue scientific research in the State.

Speaking at the inauguration of the fifth conference of the Karnataka Science and Technology Academy at Dayananda Sagar College here on Wednesday, he said: “We do not have enough funds and space to organise science programmes. Hence, we are conducting events at private auditoriums paying exorbitant rents. This is not the way to run the Academy.”

The Academy should be a forum where students can learn and develop interest in science, he said.

No thrust on astrophysics

He regretted that many universities in the country did not offer MSc courses in astrophysics, a discipline that bagged many Nobel prizes. The Isro’s proposal to fund courses related to astrophysics will benefit more than 400 universities, he said.

Rao exuded confidence that in 10-15 years, man would be able to set foot on Mars.

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, who was  present at the programme, said an acre of land would be allotted to the Academy.

The State government will consider allocating more land and funds to the Academy for taking up further research, he said.
