Ex-Customs official in CBI net

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Tuesday, arrested former Customs Deputy Commissioner K S Chandrasekhar from his residence here in connection with a 2008 case.

Quoting CBI sources in Kochi, where the case has been registered, agencies had reported that the arrest was made in a case pertaining to misappropriation of electronics goods consignment sent from Kuwait in 2008.

The CBI had, on January 5 filed an FIR against two former customs officials and a then preventive officer for criminal breach of trust and misuse of official position.

The FIR was filed  against former customs superintendent M P Savithri, the then preventive officer P R P Panicker and Chandrasekhar in the CBI court in Kochi.

They were also charged with forging documents and taking possession of electronics goods — a sound system, plasma television, and mounting brackets--worth an estimated Rs 1 lakh sent from Kuwait during 2008-09.

The accused were posted at the Nedumbassery airport when the incident was reported.

“Savithri and Panicker are alleged to have helped Chandrasekhar forge documents and take possession of the goods sent by a non-resident Indian,” sources said.

The electronics goods were recovered following a raid onChandrasekhar's residence in Bangalore.
