Time for generosity: Khurshid on marines

Last Updated 20 December 2012, 20:27 IST

Reacting to Kerala High Court’s latest order on the two Italian marines being tried for killing Indian fishermen off the coast of the southern State, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said that some generosity could be shown to the under-trials during Christmas.

“Now the  Court, in its wisdom, has felt that some more (bail) conditions can be relaxed temporarily, because it is Christmas time and people show some degree of generosity. Christmas is the time for families to be together and we should respect what court has done,” said Khurshid.

Asked whether the Government was going soft on the marines Latore Massimilliano and Salvatore Girone, Khurshid told journalists: “It is neither being harsh nor soft. The court has to decide what conditions have to be imposed. In earlier order, the court have allowed certain relaxation of conditions for bail but on the other hand also restricted the movement and confined them to one particular guest house.”

“This is between the High Court and the petitioners (the marines),” Khurshid told journalists after Kerala High Court on Thursday said that the bail conditions of the marines could be modified if the Union government felt that the undertaking by the Italian Ambassador to India was acceptable and travel documents could be issued to them.

Official sources said that the Centre would go through the assurances given by the marines in the court before taking the final call in the matter.
