Ball badminton Natls in city after 16 years

After a gap of 16 years, the ball badminton Nationals will return to city when the 58th Senior National Ball Badminton Championships will be held from December 26-30 at the Co­r­poration ground, MEI Layout in Bagalagunte.

A total of 32 men’s and 28 women’s teams, featuring about 800 players, along with 200 officials will be part of the event which will have a total prize money of Rs 2 lakh.

Announcing the event at a press meet, CH Mallikarjuna, organising secretary, said it was a momentous occasion for ball badmintion in the State as the Nationals was taking place after a long gap.

“It is after 16 years that the Senior nationals are being held in Karnataka so we are looking to make this event a huge success,’’ he added.

Karnataka are the defending champions in the men’s section after winning the title at the 2011 Nationals in Hyderabad while Tamil Nadu are the holders in the women’s event.
Individual cash prizes worth Rs 55,000 each will also be on offer for the top four men and women.

S Komaleshwara, General Secretary, MEI Layout 2nd Stage Sports & Cultural Association, said it’s time that traditional games such as ball badminton are encouraged among youngsters.
