'Teach English through Kannada'

Last Updated 24 December 2012, 18:45 IST

Jnanapith awardee Dr Chandrasekhara Kambara on Sunday said that teaching English through Kannada was the need of the hour.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Akhila Karnataka Makkala Sammelana - 2012, a three-day children’s extravaganza organised by Karnataka Bala Vikasa Academy, Dharwad, and Akhila Karnataka Makkala Koota here.

Dr Kambara said the present system of education lays emphasis on information rather than knowledge. Hence, the children were deviating from cultural, social and family values. This was not the practice in the olden days, he added.

Dr Kambara said adoption of the policies framed by the Britishers were responsible for the flaws in the present education system. “Students are forced to score more marks than imbibe values. There used to be story-telling classes when we were students, but that is not the case these days,” he added.

He requested the organisers to arrange parents’ meet one of the days to address such challenges.
