Delhi University's special meeting of academic council held on Monday passed the recommendations of course structure for the four year graduation with five dissents. The new structure will be implemented in 2013 academic session.

“Out of the 120 members around 70 were present. It is festival time for a section, vacations are going on, AC members are not experts in all subjects and have to take views of teachers actually teaching a particular course.

The majority feeling from members was not to rush as they cited the infrastructure problem. Questions were raised by principals, deans etc on accommodating students for four years when DU colleges are witnessing huge problem of infrastructure,” said Renu Bala, AC member.

There will be exit points after two years which will be called as an associate degree. “There were concerns raised by majority members that the whole idea of adhering to reservations will not be helpful with an exit point after two years. Students coming from the weaker section have societal and financial pressures. Till now atleast they were getting a degree,” said Bala.

Faculty from education department showed their concern regarding two year integrated associate degree equivalent to the District Institute of Educational and Training (DIET).
“They felt that they were not consulted before coming out with a decision like this.

Also they referred  to various committee reports which states that training for teachers should be for a longer duration,” said Rajesh Jha, AC member.

The completion of three years will be called baccalaureate and four years as baccalaureate (honours).

“We questioned that if the baccalaureate is written on the marksheet instead of the streams, that may create confusion if student applies in other universities. It was amended for the time being where the degree alongwith the stream will be put,” added Jha.

BA, BSc and BCom (Programme) have been scrapped. There will be 11 foundation courses which are compulsory and will have maths, sciences, management etc courses which have to be finished in two years.

“Students from arts stream who have already decided in school about their preference of subjects, have to study maths and science etc again. Total number of papers are 42. They were saying that the students study load will lessen in this structure, but we doubt it,” added Bala.

On December 26, there will an executive council meeting where the same structure will be presented.

After passing the structure in both the councils, selected few members from the task force (committee set up to look into structure of 4 year graduation) will start working on the syllabus.
