Citizens' forum demands implementation of permanent irrigation scheme

Members of a citizens’ forum staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office here on Wednesday, demanding implementation of Paramashivaiah committee’s recommendations on permanent irrigation.

They also demanded that the gold mining in the Kolar Gold Fields should be resumed to facilitate economic progress of the district.

Besides, they said, a railway coach should be opened soon and projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) should be executed effectively and the scheme should be extended to agriculture activities taken up on private lands too.

The Centre and the Karnataka governments should announce special packages for the socio-economic welfare of the members of scheduled caste and scheduled tribes, who constitute a major chunk of the population in the district, they said.

The landless should be given land and the unemployed jobs; and the self-employed should be given loan at the lowest interest, they added.

Their other demands included: 30X40 ft site for the homeless; Rs one lakh subsidy for construction of house; agriculture loans at the lowest or zero interest; setting up of agriculture-based industries; minimum wage of Rs 10,000 a month for workers under unorganised sector; transport facility for products such as silk, milk and vegetables; train services from each taluk to Bangalore; upgrading roads.

Measures should be taken to check corruption rampant in the Social Welfare department and Ambedkar Development Corporation which are set up for the purpose of dalit welfare, the protesters demanded.  Action should be taken against the officials who deprive the students of their facilities in the hostels run by the Social Welfare department. 

A government medical college should be set up using the facilities in the Narasimharaja district hospital; the district also needs an engineering and polytechinic colleges. They suggested that eggs and milk, which is in abundant supply in the district, should be distributed along with mid-day meal to children in the government schools and anganwadis.
