Woman critical after jumping off train to escape rape bid

The 25-year-old, who jumped from a moving train after she was allegedly molested by two men, was in a critical condition in a hospital here Friday. An Assam Rifles trooper has been arrested for the rape bid.

"Her condition continues to be critical. A team of doctors are  monitoring and  treating her. She  has suffered injuries in her head and legs," a police official said about the woman who was shifted from Ara Sadar hospital to the Patna Medical College and Hospital here after she jumped from the train Thursday evening.

"We have informed her parents and they are coming to meet her," Patna Railway Superintendent of Police Suresh Choudhary told IANS.  Choudhary said police were yet to record the victim's statement as she was in a serious condition.

The woman, from Darjeeling in West Bengal, was seriously injured when she jumped out of the Delhi-bound Brahamputra Mail between Ara and Buxar railway  stations to escape the rape bid by two men, police said.

The Government Railway Police with the help of passengers caught one of the accused at Buxar railway station.

Choudhary said Ramesh Kumar, an Assam Rifles trooper posted in Arunachal Pradesh, had been arrested.

"A case has been lodged against him," he said.

Giving details, an official said two men followed the woman to the toilet and tried
to molest her after the train moved out from the Ara station.

"She was travelling to Delhi to join her husband, who worked  at a garment shop," he said.
