Girl set ablaze after failed rape bid

A 16-year-old girl, who was set ablaze by a youth with the help of his parents after a failed rape bid, has been battling for life at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad district and her condition continues to be ''very critical''.

Gyan Patel, an engineering student, allegedly tried to rape the girl on Saturday when she was alone at her home in the Shnakargarh locality. However, he had to retreat after the stiff resistance by the minor girl, a student of 10th standard.

According to the police, Patel later returned with his parents, identified as Santosh and Geeta, with a can of kerosene. Together, they caught hold of the girl, took her on the roof and poured kerosene on her before setting her ablaze.

The victim’s sister, who had gone out to fetch water from a nearby well, rushed home after seeing flames on her home’s roof. However, by the time she doused the flames, the girl had suffered extensive burns.

The culprits also allegedly threatened the family with dire consequences if they approached the police. The family kept quiet for a day though the girl was admitted to a local primary health centre.
