TMC-CPM clash: Bamanghata still tense

Tension prevailed at Bamanghata in South 24 Parganas a day after a clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the rival CPM that left many people injured while police did very little to restore law and order in the area.

“We have arrested 57 people, recovered six firearms and 12 rounds of bullets,” South 24 Parganas SP Praveen Tripathy said.

When asked about the Left Front’s allegation that several CPM supporters suffered bullet injuries, Tripathy said: “Some vehicles were torched. Some people were injured because of clashes but as of now, I don’t have any injury report, either of bullet or of something else.” However, the TMC and the CPM continued to flex their muscles while blaming each other for the clash.

Leader of the Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra said: “Hooliganism is not new for the Trinamool Congress. They have done it when they were in the Opposition and now they are doing it when they are in the government.”

Refuting the charges, TMC General Secretary Mukul Roy said: “The TMC has taken the people out of the dark days and now the CPM wants to disrupt the law and order and bring those days again.”
