13-year-old raped by father in Tamil Nadu

People in the country’s southernmost district of Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu have been shocked by two rapes in a day. In one case, the girl-victim’s father is the alleged culprit.

In the first case, a 23-year-old woman (name withheld), working in fish processing unit in Kanniyakumari, was sexually assaulted by a 28-year-old Rubestein of Chinnamuttom, a key fish landing centre near there, Police sources in the District Headquarters of Nagercoil told Deccan Herald on Wednesday.

The victim usually walked by the beach side while returning from work and the youth in this case had “stalked her and allegedly raped her on the beach sands” on Tuesday, the sources said over telephone.

The second rape was reported from Marthandam, again close to Kanniyakumari, on Tuesday, the sources said. A 13-year-old girl studying in the ninth class in a Government school there (name withheld) was sexually abused, allegedly by her own father, aged about 44 years.

The accused, whose name was given as Arumugam of Marthandam, had “raped the girl in their home”, Police said.

While the rape victims have been sent to hospital for medical attention, the two accused in the cases were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Palayamkottai Central prison on Wednesday, the sources added.
