A lower court in Rajasthan on Thursday awarded death sentence to a person accused of rape and murder of a minor in Ganganagar district, in what is thought of as the first instance of maximum punishment to a sex offender in the state in recent years.
Police said the accused, 28-year-old Sonu alias Sohanlal, who was living in a rented accommodation at Sadushehar, befriended the 15-year-old victim belonging to the same neighbourhood.
On May 17, 2010, Sonu invited the girl to his room on some pretext and raped her. He then strangled her to death.
He was held after a complaint was lodged by the victim’s family. The matter has been in trial at the Additional district court of Dharum Dutt Sharma.
