Dead Bihar woman was not raped: DIG

Last Updated 14 January 2013, 19:42 IST

The top brass of Bihar police on Monday said that a woman who was found murdered and hanging half-naked from a tree, at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur, was not gang-raped.

To buttress his point, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of that zone, Amit Kumar Jain, quoted the Medical Board’s post-mortem report which said that “there was no evidence to suggest forceful sexual activity.”

A section of media had reported that a woman, who was travelling from Alipurdwar (West Bengal) to New Delhi by the Brahmaputra Mail, was gang-raped, killed and her semi-naked body hung from a tree in a mango orchard in Kahalgaon on Sunday. The report said that the woman was dragged and gang-raped by unidentified persons after she alighted (for some unknown reasons) from the train between Vikramshila and Kahalgaon stations.

Accepting that she was killed and her body was hung from a tree, police denied the gang-rape theory. “Whatever has been published in a section of media is not completely correct,” said the DIG and added that manhunt had been launched to apprehend the culprits.

Sources said the woman was feeling restless in the crowded compartment of the train and, hence, wanted to get down, but was persuaded by co-passengers not to do so in the running train. But when the train slowed down between Kahalgaon and Vikramshila junctions, she jumped out of the compartment. The Kahalgaon GRP was informed about the incident.

Her son, who was travelling with her in the train, later said the victim was mentally disturbed. Bhagalpur SP, K S Anupam, said the police were investigating the case from all angles and the culprits would be brought to book soon.

Rape accused commits suicide

An engineering student, who was named in a rape case, allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a moving train in the Delhi-Ambala section on Sunday night, PTI quoted police as saying in Sonipat.  Rohit, a resident of Salwan district near Panipat was a final year B.Tech student of a college and was accused in a rape case. Rohit’s father Mahendra has alleged that harassment by the police and the victim’s family forced his son to take the extreme step.
