DMRC gives green signal to monorail project

Rs 2,235 cr for corridor to be commissioned in early 2017

After reviewing the detailed project report (DPR) prepared by RITES Ltd on the 11-km-long proposed monorail corridor in east Delhi, the DMRC gave a go-ahead to the proposal.

“RITES Ltd carried out a Techno Economic Feasibility Study and DPR for this corridor and gave it to DMRC. After reviewing it, DMRC has submitted its report to the government for corridor’s implementaion,” said transport minister Ramakant Goswami.

The work on the project is expected to start in a couple of months. The corridor will be commissioned in early 2017 at an estimated cost of  Rs 2,235 crore.

Goswami said although buses were the main mode of public transport and three Metro lines cater to different parts of east Delhi, there was a need to have alternate mass transit connectivity in the form of monorail to supplement the Metro services.

“It is more easy and cheap to lay monorail lines than the Metro lines and it can take more sharp curves than Metro. It can also run in densely populated localities as it takes less area to operate,” added Goswami.

He was accompanied by east Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director Mangu Singh while making rounds of route-alignment and proposed sites of the station for the first monorail corridor.

“The advent of monorail will usher in an era of public transport at the doorstep of people in congested colonies where it is impossible to lay Metro rail lines,” said Dikshit.
He added that the corridor will cater to 1.5 lakh passengers daily and fares will be similar to those of Metro.

The 11-km corridor from Shastri Park Metro station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations.
There will be three inter-change points at Shastri Park, Nirman Vihar and Trilokpuri connecting monorail to three different Metro lines — Dilshad Garden-Rithala, Anand Vihar-Dwarka and Mukundpur-Yamuna Vihar line respectively.

Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri are the stations that will be covered under the project.
