Govt to build expressway from Ludhiana to Delhi

Last Updated 16 January 2013, 20:31 IST

The Centre on Wednesday decided to construct a six-lane expressway between Ludhiana and the national capital at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore.

“Delhi, Punjab and Haryana have in principle accorded approval to build 357 km Delhi-Ludhiana Expressway, a route map for which will be finalised by next month,” Road Transport and Highways Minister C P Joshi told reporters here.

An expressway is a controlled-access highway designed exclusively for high-speed traffic. Townships will be constructed along the road. “The cost of the expressway per km will be about Rs 40 crore and Rs 5,000 crore will be incurred on land acquisition,” Joshi said.

Though the Union Cabinet had approved building an expressway from Delhi to Chandigarh, it had decided to re-align the project from Delhi to Ludhiana with a link to Chandigarh, he said.
