SC ruling on Italian marines' petition today

Supreme Court on Friday will pronounce its judgement on the petition by Italian marines who are facing trial for shooting dead two fishermen off Kollam coast.

In their petitions, the marines have submitted that Kerala police have no jurisdiction to register case against them as the incident took place in international waters. They asked for the FIR to be quashed.

A bench of chief justice Altamas Kabir and Justice Chetameswar will dispose of the petition in the morning, said sources in the state government.

Italy expressed unhappiness to the Indian government for the Supreme Court’s failure to rule the petition despite conclusion of the hearing three months ago.

The marines, Massimiliano Lattore and Salvatore Girone, were the members of the security team on the Italian oil tanker Enrica Lexie. They shot at an Indian fishing boat in February last year mistaking it as a pirate craft, killing the fishermen in the process.

They were permitted by the Kerala High court to return home for celebrating Christmas and New Year with their family. Welcoming it, Rome then said that it honours Indian law and its judicial system.
