A 54-year-old Delhi Police ASI was accidentally shot dead in a celebratory firing at a wedding ceremony in east Delhi’s Anand Vihar on Friday. A businessman has been arrested.

Assistant sub-inspector Ombir Singh Dhama lived with family at Shyam Park Extension in Ghaziabad.

He joined police in 1980 and was posted with the security wing. Police said the incident took place at CBT Ground in Karkardooma around 10 pm.

“Ombir had gone to attend a wedding of his relative’s son. It is alleged that some people were indulging in celebratory firing when a bullet hit Ombir,” a police official said.

The bullet hit Ombir on the right side of his chest. He was rushed to Dr Hedgewar Hospital at 11.10 pm but was declared brought dead upon arrival.

It is pertinent to mention that no call was made to the police control room. A probe was initiated after the hospital authorities informed police about a person being brought with gunshot wounds.

“Apart from the wound on Ombir’s chest, two others wounds, including one on right arm, were also found during medical examination,” a source said.

Pankaj, a businessman residing at Durgapuri in Shahdara, has been arrested. Police are, however, yet to recover the weapon involved.

“Prima facie, it appears to be a case of accidental firing,” the official added.
A case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of Arms Act has been lodged with Anand Vihar police station.
