'Vishwaroopam' banned for 15 days in TN

Last Updated 23 January 2013, 19:18 IST

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to ban the screening of Kamal Hassan’s latest film “Vishwaroopam,” due for release across the state on January 25, for 15 days.

The decision comes in the wake a controversy triggered by the film, with various Muslim organisations taking serious exception to the alleged offensive references to the Quran.

The district collectors and police chiefs across Tamil Nadu have been asked to issue necessary orders for implementing the ban, sources said.

“The exact nature of the order has to be checked with the respective district collectors,” a senior state government official told Deccan Herald.

The decision was taken after Chief Minister J Jayalalitha reviewed the law and order situation in the state on Wednesday evening.

She held a meeting with top state police and law officials, in the wake of a petition submitted earlier in the day to the state home secretary by various Muslim organisations, seeking a “total ban” on the film.
