Newlywed woman found dead

Bangalore, Jan 26, 2013, DHNS:

A 23-year-old newlywed woman was found dead, hanging from a ceiling fan Friday night.

The victim Lakshmi Bai’s family members have alleged a foul play and dowry harassment as reason for her death.

Pushpavathi Bai, her mother, said she raised the girl alone after her husband’s death and got her married two months ago to Mukesh Rao of Malur, who was into business of supplying distilled water after quitting his job as cab driver.

Rao and his mother Saraswathi Bai were harassing Lakshmi mentally and physically for more money as dowry, Pushpavathi alleged.

She said money and gold jewellery worth Rs 10 lakh were given to the in-laws. But they demanded more money frequently as Rao suffered a huge loss in his business. Unable to bear the harassment Lakshmi committed suicide, said the mother.

Pushpavathi learnt about the death of her daughter through her son-in-law. Rao told the police that Lakshmi committed suicide when he and his mother had gone out to attend a family function.

He said he broke open the door of his house when Lakshmi did not answer any of his calls when they returned home late in the night.

They found her hanging with her saree from the ceiling fan in their bedroom.

The Varthur police arrested Rao on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.

His mother Sarasawathi and her younger brothers are absconding. The police are on the lookout for them.
