Fast track courts dispose of 27 cases

The six fast track courts set up in Delhi to deal with cases of sexual offence against women have disposed of 27 of the nearly 500 cases handed over to them early this month.

Of the 27 cases, 12 have resulted in conviction with varying sentences, including a death penalty, while in 15 cases, the court has acquitted the accused.

In the 27 cases, 23 were rape cases while three were gang rape cases, and one of outraging the modesty of woman.

Of a total 1,031 cases of sexual offence pending in the six district courts, till now at least 500 cases have been transferred to the fast track courts. The rest will be transferred to the FTCs when they come up for hearing in courts, where they were being heard earlier. Six judicial officers had taken charge of the FTCs on January 4.

According to sources, 240 cases of sexual offence are pending in the Saket court, including 29 gang rape cases.

Of these, additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna has heard and acted upon one rape case, resulting in acquittal. Khanna is also trying the December 16 gang rape and murder case. He presides over an FTC having jurisdiction to try cases in south and south-east Delhi.

At least 96 cases of sexual offence were pending in Dwarka court, of which 21 were gang rape cases. In the past one month, ASJ Virender Bhat has decided eight cases with four resulting in conviction and four in acquittal.
The first case to be decided in the Dwarka FTC was by ASJ Bhat, who gave death penalty to a 56-year-old convict for raping and killing a three-year-old child.

Similarly, 256 sexual offence cases were pending in Rohini court, of which 46 were gang rape cases. The Rohini FTC presided over by ASJ M C Gupta has decided three cases, ending in conviction in all the cases.
In Karkardooma court where 227 cases of sexual offence, including 28 gang rape cases were pending, the FTC of ASJ T R Naval has disposed of five cases with two resulting in conviction and three in acquittal. The number of sexual offence cases pending at Tis Hazari courts is 208, with 26 gang rape cases.
