An incubation centre and common instrumentation facility are being set up in the biotech park here, Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said today.

The biotech park, Bangalore Helix, which is being developed by the Karnataka government with financial assistance from the Centre, is finally taking shape, he said after inaugurating the 13th edition of Bangalore India BIO, a premier three-day biotech show.

Alexandria Real Estates has started development of the Alexandria Knowledge Park in Bangalore Helix, which will be operational in about two years time, the Chief Minister said.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson, Karnataka Vision Group on Biotechnology and CMD, Biocon Ltd, said the biotech industry is facing several challenges, some of which are intellectual property and access to capital market.

"Protecting the intellectual property and affordable innovation are a must," she told at the event, organised by the Department of Information Technology, Bio-Technology and Science & Technology, Government of Karnataka and the Vision Group on Biotechnology.
