Elderly woman burnt alive

An elderly woman was burnt alive inside a thatched bathroom at Sanehalli on Monday night.

The dead has been identified as Basamma (65).

Basamma, who had lost her husband 30 years ago, was living an independent life in a thatched hut. She had no children.

She had leased out an acre of land to a farmer and lived on money and grains provided by the lessee.

On Monday night, when she lit fire to boil water in the bathroom, the fronds caught fire accidentally, killing her on the spot.

Efforts of her neighbours to douse the fire failed to save Basamma.
