Cauvery basin farmers warn of violent protest

Last Updated 07 February 2013, 19:34 IST

District Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti president G Madegowda has said that there was no question of releasing water from the KRS.

“We are not Varuna (rain god) to release water when it is not in the reservoir. Given the present level in the KRS, water, if released, will not even reach Mettur,” Made Gowda said.

He added that there was neither question of any protest as water could not be released at all.

Raitha Sangha leader K S Puttannaiah warned that dejected people might take to a ‘violent revolution’ if water was released from KRS.

Speaking to reporters, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy charged the Union government with buckling under pressure from regional parties in connection with Cauvery dispute.

“Union government appears to have forgotten that Karnataka is on the map of India. The turn of events will only weaken the federal structure of the country,” he said.
