'Huge potential for Indian coffee in world market'

State-of-the-art coffee roasting unit comes up at Kushalangar

The coffee market in India has huge potentials and India will definitely secure its position in the top five list of nations consuming coffee, said Starbucks Coffee Company China and Asia Pacific President John Culver.

He was addressing media persons after inaugurating the newly developed state-of-the-art coffee roasting unit at Kushalangar on Friday. The unit has been developed by Tata Coffee Ltd in partnership with Starbucks Company. Giving the list of top five countries which are the highest consumers of coffee at present, he said the USA, Canada, Japan, England, Brazil and China top the list. With the increasing number of educated and working population in India, there is no doubtthat India too would join the top five league in a near future, he said with confidence.

“Starbucks purchases coffee from various countries and it is quite satisfied with the quality of coffee produced in India. We have facilitated the country with advanced technology necessary for roasting and powdering coffee beans. The company is ready to offer competitive prize to the best quality coffee producer. This country produces the best of arabica coffee in the world and we have continued the process to buy the product,” he said.

On be half of the company, he also offered to offer trainings to the local coffee growers on cultivating best coffee and maintaining the plantations. The best coffee produced after offering the training, will be purchased by Starbucks, he said.

Appreciating Tata Coffee Ltd for its social work, John Culver said that Starbucks which is working partnership with Tata, too has joined its hands in pro-social activities. “We will give our co-operation to improve the quality of life of the coffee growers who produce the best quality coffee.”

Tala Company Ltd Managing Director Hameed Haq said that the roasting unit has been set up in the district to encourage coffee trade in Kodagu. The unit would also help coffee growers in several ways.

About the unit

The unit has been developed in an area spreading across 8,258 sq. ft. with an installed capacity of 375MT, readied for commercial run. In addition to the state-of-the-art roaster, the plant also has a PLC-operated green coffee handling system for effective control of recipe, and automatic filling and automatic sealing line boosted with high precision testing equipment to comply with the quality standards of the companies.

The operations are well-supported by an efficient utilities section and sophisticated equipment with best-in-class safety systems. The plant has three major sections – a Green Coffee Storage and Handling section, a roasting section and a packing and dispatch section. These three sections combined produce the finest quality coffee beans, consistent with the high quality Starbucks and Tata are known for around the globe.
