Two labourers suffocate to Death in power station

Two contractual labourers, employed by a private firm in Kota Thermal Power Station (KTPS) died of suffocation while working here, police said today.

The incident took place early yesterday morning when two workers -- Mittulal Gurjar (45) and Ramdayal Mahavar (40) while being on duty in panel room of Unit 3 and 4 lit charcoal to warm the room that had no ventilation for the smoke, Bhagwat Singh Hingad, Station House Officer (SHO) said.

At around 4 o' clock last morning, on not receiving the response of the call, the other staff members reached the room and found the labourers who hailed from Kota unconscious and were rushed to hospital where doctors declared them dead, Hingad said.

A case of negligence under section 304(A) has been registered against the firm Navdeep Engineering Works of Kota for negligence in employing the labourers who were illiterate and ignorant of the risk of sleeping in charcoal – smoked room, he said.

Following the death, other contractual labourers of KTPS staged protest and demonstration and demanded compensation for the families of the deceased.

The angry workers carried the dead bodies at the KTPS gates and did not allow postmortem till yesterday noon.

Later, authorities agreed to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to each of the families of the two deceased.

After the postmortem at hospital, the dead bodies were handed over to the kin of the deceased for last rites, he said.
