The law has taken own course: Tewari

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari has defended Afzal Guru’s execution.

“The law has taken its own course,” Tewari told reporters at Tamil Nadu Congress Committee headquarters here. Pradesh Congress chief B S Gnanadesikan was also present.

“The government has to ensure that the law is followed rigorously while dealing with processes under the criminal law,” Tewari said.

Ruling out any political motive behind the hanging, Tewari said the decision was taken for the sake of national security. “While taking decisions on national security, we do not keep electoral considerations in mind,” Tewari said. The decision followed a proper legal process.

Meanwhile, the political class in the state was cautious with their reactions on the issue and maintained a low profile. While security across the state was tightened, the common man hardly sympathised with the Parliament attack case convict. “Emboldened by the recent ban on screening of Kamal Haasan’s ‘Vishwaroopam,’ some Muslim groups could protest against the hanging. But everyone knows the heinousness of the crime committed by the accused,” said an autorickshaw driver in Chennai.
