East Delhi already boasts of two modern sports complexes — Yamuna Sports Complex and Commonwealth Games Village. But it is all set to get a third state-of-the-art sports complex soon.

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation is coming up with the facility in Trilokpuri. The two existing facilities were developed by the Delhi Development Authority.
The new proposal has been cleared by the corporation along with the budgetary proposals for the next financial year.

According to officials, the architecture department of the corporation has drafted a model of the sports complex, which will be spread over 19,050 sqm.

“The complex has been ideated as a one-point destination that will serve both sports enthusiasts and health conscious people,” said a senior corporation officer.

“While it will have outdoor and indoor facilities for sportspersons, the walkways, running tracks and gymnasium can be used by fitness conscious people,”
The major highlights of the complex include a football ground, walkway, running track, swimming pool and gymnasium, among others.

“The complex will have facilities for indoor games like basketball and lawn tennis. It will also have a multi-purpose hall for gymnastics, wrestling, skating, boxing and board games,” an officer said.

Access to the complex will be easy as the entrance will be on a 80-feet-wide main road, apart from having a parking capacity of some 50 vehicles, the officer added.
Construction of the complex, which may cost Rs 17 crore, is likely to start soon, said an officer.

As far as membership of the complex is concerned, officials said the charges will be nominal.

“Though we have not yet decided the charges, they will be nominal so that a maximum number of people are able to benefit from it. We can even allow school and college students playing professional sports to use the facility free of cost,” an official said.

The EDMC also decided to open sports academies in 40 municipal schools. It plans to hire coaches from Patiala Physical Training School for the proposed academies.

“The idea behind opening sports academies in schools is to promote sports among youngsters. Since kids generally play outdoors games, facilities for training in games like cricket, football and basketball will be provided,” said leader of the House in East Corporation B B Tyagi.

“We will hire 10 coaches from the training school in Patiala. One coach will take care of four academies,” said Tyagi.
