Distribute coloured bins to all houses, says DC

Deputy Commissioner N Prakash has directed the officials concerned to take steps to distribute coloured bins to houses in all wards of the city municipal and town municipals in Dakshina Kannada district for segregation of waste.

Chairing a meeting to review the developmental work in local bodies at Deputy Commissioner’s office,  the DC instructed the local bodies to strictly follow the segregation process prior to the collection, so as to ensure that the waste problem is controlled in the source level itself.

Giving out details about the waste collection in municipalities, the officers said house to house waste collection is carried out in 21 wards out of 23 wards in Bantwal town, of which segregation is done in the houses of six wards.

Door to door collection is done in nine wards out of 11 wards in Belthangady town panchayat. Mulki town municipal and Moodbidri town municipal stand as model with 100 per cent door to door waste collection taking place in all the 17 and 23 wards respectively. As far as Puttur town is concerned, door to door waste is collected from 4800 houses in all the 18 wards of which segregation is done in 800 houses.

Furthermore, the officers said that segregated waste is collected from 1800 houses in Sullia town, from 800 houses in Ullal area and waste is collected from five market areas. The Deputy Commissioner directed to take measures for the proper waste disposal from slaughter houses, fish markets and vegetable markets in every municipality.

He also insisted to compulsorily use the sucking machines in all the municipalities and dig compost pits, produce compost out of organic waste and sell it.

Under Vajapayee Nagara Vasathi Yojane, the administration intends to build 2045 houses and 1289 beneficiaries have submitted applications seeking for the benefit. He asked the officers to ensure 100 per cent success in the implementation of the scheme.

Mangalore City Corporation Commissioner Dr K Harish Kumar, Additional DC Dayanand and others were present.
