Designs that smack of grandeur

Some may feel that saris are going out of style.

But a fashion show, organised recently by Kalanikethan, proved otherwise. Launching its newest collection, Silk Utsav — which comprises of kanjeevaram saris — the store showcased many colours and vibrant designs, which were contemporary and nature-oriented. On the ramp, these designs were both overwhelming as well as
flattering.

Bhavana Belegere, a television producer, inaugurated the newest collection and excitedly tried on some of the different pieces herself.

A short sequence of six designs was showcased on the ramp, which included myriad colours and patterns. The first sari was a combination of pink and green, while the second included sequins, floral designs and shades inspired by nature.

The next was a beige and green sari with zari work. It was followed by a maroon bridal sari and a green sari, both in heavy brocade. The showstopper of the fashion show, Kannada actress Bhavana Rao, emerged in a dazzling blue sari with Swarovski crystals, which was elaborately designed and smacked of grandeur.

Commenting on the collection, Bhavana says, “I’m comfortable in a sari and it felt great to be wearing this grand piece. Saris are beautiful and cool. Nowadays, most women wear elaborate saris to parties as well, despite the notion that they are out of fashion.”
She adds, “It may not be a costume fit for the everyday life for today’s women — but it is definitely something that is still in. Saris make you feel Indian. That feeling of wearing something that reflects your culture and the oneness of the costume with our country, speaks through every single piece.”

Wearing such heavy saris and walking the ramp definitely doesn’t look like an easy task.

But Viraja, one of the models at the fashion show, says, “There is a misconception that saris are heavy and unmanageable. Most saris do make one feel hot and sweaty — but this collection was light, manageable, and pretty easy to carry around.”
