Building collapse: East Delhi Mayor blames PWD

Last Updated 21 February 2013, 14:28 IST

Mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation, Annapurna Mishra today blamed PWD for "negligence" in death of two persons, including a minor girl, in a building collapse in northeast Delhi.

"The PWD is responsible for the incident. The foundation of the building was five-feetdeep while the PWD had dug up a ten-feet-deep drain adjacent to the building," Mishra alleged.
The two-storey building had collapsed yesterday at Tahirpur Sarai Colony near GTB Enclave in northeast Delhi in which Birpal Yadav (34) and his nine-year-old daughter Sapna were killed.

Mishra said the PWD neither vacated the house nor informed the family about the digging work. The Mayor met the bereaved family and expressed her deep condolence.
"A case should be registered against the errant officers and contractor of the department," Mishra added.

However, a PWD official said all laid down procedures were followed in starting the digging work.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today announced a compensation of Rs three lakh to the family of the deceased.
