Woman, daughter found dead

Cops detain youth who stayed with them six months ago, probe on

A woman and her five-year-old daughter were murdered allegedly over personal enmity at their house in outer Delhi’s Rohini on Thursday. Sources said a youth known to the family has been detained after police found entry into the house friendly.

Yasmin, 34, lived with her husband Aslam Ali and daughter Sophia at block C in Rohini sector 1. Police said they learnt about the incident after Aslam made a call to them at 2.15 pm.

“Yasmin was found with her throat slit and body partially burnt, while Sophia’s body was spotted in a bed. She was strangled to death,” a police officer said. The corpses have been preserved for post-mortem at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital.

Aslam, who works with a property dealer at block B in Rohini sector 1, told police that his neighbour informed him over phone that smoke was seen coming out from his house.

“Aslam was near the house when he was informed, and he rushed home. He claimed to have seen Yasmin and Sophia lying dead with smoke emanating from a bed,” the official added.

An initial probe revealed that entry into the house was friendly due to which Yasmin’s family members, relatives and neighbours are being questioned. Police have not ruled out a possibility that someone known to the family may be involved.

“The house was not ransacked due  to which a robbery angle is not being probed into. We are questioning people to get clues about the incident or any culprit,” the officer added.

A case of murder has been lodged with Vijay Vihar police station and police hope to ascertain the time frame of the incident with the autopsy reports. Police believe that the incident took place between 1.30 pm and 2 pm.

“Sophia returned home from school at noon. Aslam also returns home for lunch around 1.30 pm, and was on his way when a call was made to his phone by Yasmin. He, however, could not receive the call as he was driving,” the officer said, quoting Aslam.

A neighbour told police that a man had visited the house around 1 pm. Sources said a man named Nadeem — who hails from Aslam’s village in Badaun district of UP and used to stay with Aslam’s family six months ago —  has been detained over suspicion.

The situation also went out of control on the spot when Aslam’s relatives refused to shift the bodies to hospital. An extra police force was called to the spot after which the bodies were taken to BSA Hospital.

Yasmin and Aslam’s four sons study in a boarding school at Bengaluru.
