Rajya Sabha adjourned twice over Hyderabad bombings

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice before lunch Friday as opposition members slammed the government for adopting a casual approach towards terror and demanded a discussion on the twin bomb attacks in Hyderabad.

The first adjournment took place soon after the house met at 11 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted the question hour adjourned to take up the Thursday evening bombings that killed 16 people.

Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh said Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde would make a statement at 2.30 p.m. As the opposition kept seeking an immediate discussion, Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the house till noon.

When the house met at noon, the chairman instructed the government to make an inquiry into the alleged mishandling of Rajya Sabha MP T.N. Seema. After that, he adjourned the house till 2.30 p.m. even as the opposition members termed the move "unfair".

BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu flashed a news report that claimed that the government had information that a blast could take place in Hyderabad.

Tamil MPs in the upper house meanwhile raised the issue of "war crimes" in Sri Lanka.
AIADMK and DMK members flashed pictures of the slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran's 12-year-old son, who was reportedly shot dead in cold blood in May 2009.
