Showstoppers ll the way

Manish Malhotra’s bridal collection themed Destination Wedding stole the show at the Couture Week. The show was attended by the who’s who of Bollywood, all dressed in their classiest best, rooting for Manish. The show titled Destination Wedding was Manish’s trendiest bridal collection so far.

The front rows were occupied by Manish’s industry friends, some of which included Karan Johar, Kajol, Raveena Tandon, Imran along with beau Avantika, Preity Zinta, Sridevi and Bonny Kapoor, Uday Chopra, Ameesha Patel, Sophie Choudhary, Diya Mirza, Priyanka Chopra, Dino Morea, Nandita Mitani, Sheetal Mafatlal, Aarti Surrendarnath, Kavita Chogule and the Rahejas to name a few.

The collection had an almost Mediterranean feel, with white drapes and crystal chandeliers. In true Manish Malhotra style, the collection played with a lot of young and trendy colours like ivory, peach, pink and gold and saw the use of velvet and chiffon fabrics. Keeping in mind the theme of the show, the music was a mix of house with Indian wedding beats with a mix of tunes from Love Aaj Kal.

The designs with seductive lehengas and beautiful fabrics just added to the perfection of the outfits. Says a leading Bollywood actress, “Manish is a very dear friend of mine. Apart from being a fantastic designer, he is a trendsetter in his own right. I always look forward to his shows.”

The showstoppers for the event were the much-in-love Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan, who walked hand in hand on the ramp to the audience’s delight. Says a source present at the show, “Without a doubt, Manish’s shows are the trendiest. Not only do you see him work his magic on the ramp, but practically the entire Bollywood fraternity is present for it.”

What got Sanjay Dutt excited?

Sanjay Dutt didn’t require much convincing or cajoling to come on board for Aladin. The moment he heard the film’s concept and genre, he said yes.

This is not all. The moment he was on board, he was quite impatient about the film coming on floors as soon as possible and didn’t want to wait for long before director Sujoy Ghosh started calling the shots.

Says a source, “Sanju baba actually became childlike when he was narrated the concept of Aladin. He hasn’t worked in a film belonging to this genre before, the kind that involves fairytale elements embellished in a narrative that is set in today’s times.

The legend of Aladin and Genie is known worldwide and Sanju baba didn’t require much thinking to be a part of the project. As a fun-loving villain, who was capable of showing his mean side any moment, the character was tailor-made for him and he knew that instantaneously once the part was explained to him.”

Incidentally, it was Amitabh Bachchan himself who first had a word with Sanjay Dutt about his role of Ringmaster in Aladin.
Confirms Sujoy Ghosh, “Yes, after I had this rather elaborate narration of Aladin with Mr Bachchan, we were discussing on who could play the role of Ringmaster.”

“ We agreed that it had to be Dutt saab and I was supposed to reach out to him the next day. However, to my surprise, before I could speak to Dutt saab, Mr Bachchan had already reached out to him.”

Kicked about the entire idea, Sanjay Dutt was on board pronto. “I still remember it was 2006,” Sujoy says nostalgically. “Dutt saab was so excited about donning the hat of Ringmaster.” Sanjay had a condition though before saying yes.

“He didn’t want anyone to fiddle around with his looks,” laughs Sujoy.
Adds he, “His only condition was that he wanted the moustache of Ringmaster
to be kept intact. Of course, we had no reason not to agree.”

From one beauty to another

Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie is set to replace Charlize Theron for the role of a female agent in the upcoming remake of cult French thriller Anthony Zimmer.
Theron and Tom Cruise were signed to star in the project, to be retitled The Tourist, which tells the story of a female agent on the hunt for an elusive ex-boyfriend, who becomes a wanted man.
Cruise pulled out of the film to star in Wichita with Cameron Diaz, and was replaced by Terminator Salvation star Sam Worthington. Jolie is the latest star to enter the film’s revolving door and is in negotiations to fill in for original leading lady Theron, after she dropped out.

Asin’s French connection

During the shoot of London Dreams in Paris, Asin would go sight-seeing a lot. A friend of the actress said, “When Asin was shooting for London Dreams, she went sight-seeing in Paris. Asin loved the churches in Paris. She even attended the masses. Asin even tried the street food available there. In short, it was a work-cum-pleasure trip for Asin.”

And not many know that Asin can read, write and speak French fluently. She is quite a master at it. A close friend of the actress revealed, “Asin can sing French songs very fluently. In fact, her college friends would tease her and call her French Nightingale. French was her favourite subject and she was the top scorer in it.”Now we know where Asin’s love for Paris stems from. One wonders if she was a French actress in her past life.

Costume saga

Costumes play a very important role in any Bollywood movie and a lot of detailing and attention is always given to them. But the same is not the case with Balki’s next movie Paa, which is a sensitive story about the relationship between a father and son who is suffering from progeria.

The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan.

A major portion of shows Abhishek wearing a white kurta pyjama, mainly because he is playing the role of a politician. “Abhishek plays a young forward-thinking politician who follows in the footsteps of his father; played by Paresh Rawal,” explains Balki. Infact, to ensure that the clothes worn by the young actor were spotless, Balki even ordered ten sets of the same kurta pyjama to be made.

Bachchan junior however doesn’t seem to mind. “It was a welcome change to not have so many different costumes. And most importantly, it was the requirement of the film,” he said.

However, the irony here is that in the remaining ten per cent of the movie, Abhishek has over thirty costume changes.
