Yet another girl was sacrificed at the altar of love in Uttar Pradesh. An 18-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her own brother in UP’s Meerut district, about 450 kilometre after she refused to desert her lover.

The culprit, after perpetrating the crime, reached the police station and admitted to killing his sister.

According to police sources, Ranjana (name changed), a resident of Kaseru Baxar in the district, had an affair with Brij Mohan, who happened to be her neighbour. Their relationship was not approved by Ranjana’s family members.

The couple had eloped from the village a fortnight ago and had married in the court. The girl was later traced and brought home however, Brij Mohan managed to flee.
On Friday, Ranjana had a heated exchange of words with her brother Arun Kumar after the latter asked her to get a divorce. But she refused to do so. Enraged over her refusal, Arun strangled her to death.

An unrepentant Arun later walked to the Inchauli police station and narrated the incident to the cops after which he was taken into custody. This is the second such incident at this village.

In an earlier incident too, the culprit had surrendered after killing his daughter over a love affair. Barely two weeks ago, a 17-year-old girl had been brutally hacked to death by her own elder brother over a love affair in Pratapgarh district.

Incidents of killings for the sake of family honour are quite common in the state, especially in the jat dominated western region.

The all powerful khaps, the caste panchayats, have made it clear that they will not allow love marriages and marriages in the same gotra.

The panchayats have also punished lovers for defying their diktat.
