The much-awaited 85th Academy Awards are finally over and viewers across the world will never forget Ben Affleck’s acceptance speech, Jennifer Lawrence’s fall when going up to receive her award or even host Seth MacFarlane joking about Rihanna and Chris Brown’s violent relationship in his opening monologue.

But more importantly, the awards themselves are a topic of discussion — ‘Argo’ won awards for ‘Best Picture’, ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’ and ‘Best Film Editing’ and Ang Lee took home the ‘Best Director’ award for ‘Life of Pi’, which also won awards for ‘Best Cinematography’, ‘Best Visual Effects’ and ‘Best Music (Original Score)’.

Daniel Day-Lewis went away with the award for ‘Best Actor’ for his performance in ‘Lincoln’, while Jennifer Lawrence won ‘Best Actress’ for ‘Silver Linings Playbook’. ‘Best Supporting Actress’ went to Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables, while Christoph Waltz received the ‘Best Supporting Actor award for ‘Django Unchained’.

Metrolife speaks to film enthusiasts in the City to find out their opinions on the wins and losses this year.

For Rohit Kumar, who leaves his house only to watch films or attend film festivals, most of the awards did not go to the right candidates. “Very few that I thought should win did. Amour deserved the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ and it makes it two years that the award has gone to a straight-up masterpiece. Daniel Day-Lewis was another that truly deserved the award. All the others were given for political reasons,” he critiques.

“The show itself was forgettable, except for the two Bond songs and Daniel Day-Lewis’ historic third ‘Best Actor’ award. Also, the host had a bizarre style that while irreverent, did not work! Even Daniel’s acceptance speech was funnier than the host,” adds Rohit.

On the contrary, Sreejita Biswas, a young professional, feels that the awards went
to the ones who most deserved it.

She says, “I think the Oscars this year were pretty good. Everything I was supporting got an award, including ‘Paperman’, which is an amazing short film.”

Another avid film-goer, Anusha Rao, notes, “There couldn’t have been a better way to start the week than to watch the Oscars telecast live. While the winners for categories like ‘Best Director’, ‘Best Film’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ were well deserved, I felt that the award for the ‘Best Animated’ movie that went to ‘Brave’ was quiet a surprise. There were better, more deserving nominations in that category.”

On a different note, film buff Abhin Shetty says, “As always, with insanely high production values, the ceremony looked nothing short of spectacular. However, it seemed to be a case of too many cooks spoil the broth, with an array of stars taking to the stage and stealing the spotlight from the ceremony itself. Seth McFarlane did a decent job, but fell short by his standards — it was as though he was put on a leash to prevent him from running riot.”
