Compensate areca nut farmers, says MP

BJP Lok Sabha member D B Chandre Gowda on Wednesday demanded the Centre to enhance the compensation to areca nut farmers for losses incurred due to yellow leaf and other disease.

In his letter to Finance Minister Chidambaram, he said though the Centre had announced Rs 6,000 per acre and maximum Rs 30,000 per farmer as compensation for losses of plants due to yellow disease, it is too meagre.

Taking into account of increased cost of areca production, the Finance Ministry must take steps to enhance the compensation from Rs 6,000 per acre to Rs 20,000 per acre and same should be distributed to beneficiaries immediately, Gowda, MP from Bangalore North Lok Sabha constituency, appealed.

He also requested the ministry that while distributing compensation the authorities concerned  should also extend the benefit to areca growing farmers in entire Dakshina Kannada and Chikmaglur districts without any discrimination.

The yellow disease hit severely in Coastal and Malnad region of Karnataka and due to this, areca nut yield has gone down, he said.
