Elections, an acid test for Shamanur, Ravindranath

One of the highlights of the campaigning for the elections to the Davangere City Corporation (DCC) has been that the candidates and the parties have shunned the use of loudspeakers, hoardings, buntings and other publicity materials to woo voters.

This follows instructions to this effect by the State Election Commission. The parties and the candidates have launched door-to-door canvassing to solicit votes, in addition to the roadshows by star campaigners of the parties.

There have been reports of malpractices during campaigning in the city and various towns of the district.

The BJP, Congress, JD(S), KJP, BSR Congress and CPI(M), besides independents are contesting the March 7 polls.

This is the second election to Davangere’s local body, after it was elevated from the status of a City Municipal Council to a Corporation, five years ago. A total of 266 candidates remain in the fray for the 41 wards. The Davangere CMC had traditionally been a Congress bastion for several years after its constitution.

Later on, communist parties like the CPM wrested control of the local body for 15 years, thanks to the labour movement that the City was famous for, as it was home to textile, oil and cotton mills, besides agro-based economic activities.

That was the time when Pampapathi, Suresh and other communist leaders represented Davangere in the Assembly. In subsequent years, the communist parties lost their hold as the labour movement declined in the region, following the closure of many mills.

The BJP came to power after the 2008 elections, winning 24 seats in a house of 41. The elections are an acid test for MLA from Davangere South, Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa and Davangere North MLA and district incharge Minister S A Ravindranath (BJP).
