As many as 25 new Aadhaar enrolment centers will be opened in the district by March 15. The district has a population of around 29 lakh out of which 26.3 lakh have received the Aadhaar card, said Ravindran B S, Chief Executive Officer, Center for e-governance.

Although transfer of benefits under few schemes including the Janani Suraksha Yojana  and scholarship schemes have been launched by the district administration, Direct Cash Transfer (DCT) of LPG subsidies and social security pensions are yet to take shape in the district.

Though transfer of wages under Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act was launched in the district on January 20, it is yet to reach a significant number of beneficiaries who have been listed under the scheme.

Seeding of Aadhaar numbers with bank accounts of beneficiaries has is yet to be completed.

Deputy Commissioner Ramegowda said that the district administration was working on seeding the bank accounts with Aadhaar numbers to facilitate DCT. After two months of the launch of DCT, seeding of more than 35,000 beneficiaries were complete in the district.

However, the delay in the implementation of various schemes under DCT has attracted criticism from skeptics who have been vocal against the scheme.  “The project is a non-starter, not properly conceived and is causing inconveniences to the people it aims to benefit,” said S G Vombatkere.

He also raised concerns on the technical viability of the scheme and privacy of the data collected for Aadhaar enrolment.

He said that the probability of mis-match of finger prints was three per cent. “Three per cent of 1.2 billion population is about three to four crore people,” he noted.
He added that with the introduction of business correspondents in villages to disburse the funds might also result in corruption.

“Since Aadhaar card is neither a proof of identity nor citizenship, what purposes does it serve”, he questioned.
