District administrations gear up for ULB polls; security beefed up

Holiday for govt offices, schools, colleges on polling day

All necessary arrangements have been made for the urban local bodies (ULB) election scheduled to be held on March 7, said deputy commissioner B N Krishnaiah, here on Tuesday.

Elections will be held for one city municipal council (CMC), four town municipal council (TMC) and two town panchayats in the district.

“We are using electronic voting machines (EVM) for the first time for ULB polls. A total of 668 candidates are contesting from 161 wards and 252 booths have been set up,” he said.

A total of 1,384 polling staff have been deputed for the election in seven centres in the district. He said the use of mobile phones has been banned in and around the polling booths on the day of election.

H Jannappa has been deputed as election observer for Mandya CMC election, Maddur and Malavalli TMC elections, and Y M Ramachandramurthy will serve as election observer for the polls in Srirangapatna and Krishnarajapet TMC and Pandavapura and Nagamangala town panchayats.

Security

Superintendent of police Bhushan G Bhorase said 129 police officers will ensure that the elections are held peacefully. In addition to it, 300 homeguards, 19 platoons of District Armed Reserve force and four platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police force have also been deputed to maintain law and order during polls.

“We have identified 25 sensitive and 33 hyper-sensitive polling booths in the district. A total of 24 cases have been registered under Excise Act and 22 persons in rowdy list have been taken into preventive custody,” he said.

Holiday

All schools and colleges in regions, where elections are held, will remain closed on March 7. Government offices and schools, where polling centres are set up will remain closed on March 6 also.

Chamarajanagar scenario

Deputy commissioner M V Savitri has issued an order banning sales of liquor on March 6 and 7 and on the counting day in view of the ULB polls.

The sale of liquor will be banned from 7 am on March 6 to midnight on March 7. It will be banned between 6 am and 8 pm on March 11, the day when the counting will be held.

The release states that all wine stores that come within 3 km radius of the polling booths and counting centres should be closed.  The ban order is to prevent any untoward incident and also to maintain peace, the DC states.

1,13,834 eligible voters


In all, 1,13,834 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the district.
There are 57,204 men and 56,630 women voters.

There are 109 wards in the district and 154 polling booths. Chamarajanagar city municipal council has 31 wards in its limits and 58 booths, with 21,234 men and 21,338 women voters.

No water on poll day

As the motor in the pumphouse that supplies water to Chamarajanagar city has gone defunct, there will be no water supply on March 6 and 7 to the city as repair works will be undertaken, said a release from CMC commissioner V H Krishnamurthy.

Hassan scenario

Urban local bodies (ULB) polls will be held in 177 wards in Hassan district on March 7. Among a total of 180 wards in the district, two members for Holenarsipur town municipal council and one candidate for Alur town panchayat have been unanimously elected, said deputy commissioner K P Mohanraj on Tuesday.

A total of 747 candidates are contesting from 177 wards. Officials have been deputed for 306 polling booths in the district.

There are 126 polling booths under Hassan city municipal council limits, he said.
Excise department officials have conducted raids on 284 places, booked 38 cases and have arrested 26 persons.

Superintendent of police Amit Singh said 30 polling booths have been identified as sensitive and 42 as hyper-sensitive in the district.
