Central help for tobacco farmers sought

 Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar has sought an assistance of Rs 13.08 crore from the Centre to help farmers in Belgaum who lost their tobacco crop due to untimely, heavy rains on December 30, 2012.

Shettar, in his letter to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on March 6, said the tobacco crop in Chikkodi taluk of Belgaum district was damaged due to untimely rains. The rains destroyed the crops grown in 1,308 hectares in 75 villages. Farmers in 14 villages had laid out for drying the harvested crop.

The loss has been estimated at Rs 13.08 crore. The claims are geniune and farmers have to be suitably compensated to overcome the hardships, Shettar said.
