The Transport department will take up a drive to ensure that all the autorickshaws in the City are mandatorily fitted with digital electronic fare meters.

A senior official from the Transport department told Deccan Herald that even though a notification in this regard was issued on January 9, 2013, thousands of autorickshaws in the City still had mechanical meters.

To start with, the department will create awareness about the rule and subsequently fix a deadline for autorickshaw owners/drivers to abide by it, he added.

According to the notification issued in accordance with Rule 129 of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, every motor cab registered and operating in Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits shall be fitted with digital electronic meter.

Rs 1,000 subsidy

During the drive, the department will also highlight another government notification of July 18, 2008, which makes owners/drivers eligible for a subsidy of Rs 1,000 if they get the mechanical meter replaced with a digital one. The department wants all the owners/drivers to avail themselves of the benefit, the official.
