Diabetic medication protects patients from heart failure

A class of medications commonly prescribed to diabetic patients for lowering blood sugar, also lowers their odds of suffering heart failure, according to a study at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.  "People with diabetes are at risk for developing heart failure," says Henry Ford researcher and cardiologist David Lanfear, M.D., lead author of the study. "Diabetic adults die of heart disease two to four times more than those without diabetes.

"Our study data suggest that diabetic patients taking a particular class of medications are less likely to develop heart failure," adds Dr. Lanfear.

The retrospective study looked at 4,427 diabetic patients who were taking blood-sugar-lowering medications at Henry Ford Hospital between January 1, 2000 and July 1, 2012. Of these patients, 1,488 were taking GLP-1 medications (glucagon-like peptide-1 analogs and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors) and 2,939 were not.

Over an observation time of 663 days, there were 281 hospitalizations, of which 184 were due to heart failure, and 158 deaths.

Google unveils 'talking shoe'

Developing Google Glass was not enough for the Internet firm, the tech giant has now unveiled a pair of talking shoes.

But that does not mean the search giant is planning to get into the sneaker or footwear business. The experiment was designed to highlight its new advertising platform called Art, Copy and Code.

Google took a few pairs of Adidas sneakers and crammed in a small computer, an accelerometer, a pressure sensor, a gyroscope, speaker and Bluetooth. The shoe can tell what you are or aren't doing and can then relay that information to your phone via Bluetooth or to you via the speaker in the top tongue of the shoe.

Aman Govil, lead of the advertising arts team, told ABC News that the 'Talking shoe' is an experiment in how one can use connected objects to tell stories on the Web.

If one puts what the shoe knows through an algorithmic logic engine, it can translate it into copy, Govil explained.

Now if that copy is given to an interesting copy writer, one could give the shoe personality. One shoe could be the trash-talking shoe, he added.
