JOIN USThe fortunes have reversed for the Congress and the BJP in the elections to the 60-member Mangalore City Corporation (MCC).
While the Congress managed to secure 35 seats, the BJP had to be content with 20 seats. The remaining five seats have been shared by JD(S) candidates (2), an Independent (BJP rebel candidate) and one candidate each of CPM and Socialist Democratic Party of India (SDPI).
In the elections of September 2007 to the MCC, the BJP had won in 35 seats, while the Congress had managed to get 20 seats.
SDPI, the party floated recently, managed to open its account in the MCC, by defeating Mayor Gulzar Banu in ward number five by a margin of 635 votes.
In Dakshina Kannada district, out of the seven ULBs including the MCC, the Congress got a clear majority in five ULBs and BJP got a clear majority in Sullia Town Panchayat.
In Puttur TMC, though the Congress managed to win 15 seats and the BJP in 12 seats, when it comes to election of president, if the votes of MLAs, MLCs and MPs are taken into account, it will be a tie as the MLAs, MPs and MLCs belong to the BJP.
Seatwise, out of the 189 seats in seven ULBs, the Congress managed to secure 108 seats, while BJP managed to secure 63 seats, JD(S) - 6, SDPI - 6, CPM - 2 and Independents - 4.
In Udupi
The Congress won the Udupi CMC, after nearly 45 years by defeating its arch rival BJP by a margin of 10 seats.
Out of the 35 seats, the Congress managed to secure 22 seats, while the BJP had to be content with 12 seats. Independent candidate won in one seat.
In the four ULBs in Udupi district, the Congress gained clear majority in Udupi CMC and Karkala TMC, while the BJP gained upper hand in Kundapur TMC and Saligrama TP.
In Kundapur TMC, BJP managed to win 12 seats, while the Congress secured nine seats and CPM got two seats. In Saligrama TP, the BJP won eight seats, while the Congress managed to secure six seats.
In Chikmagalur
No party obtained clear majority in three ULBs out of eight in Chikmagalur district.
The Congress has won 57 seats out of 148 seats in the ULBs of the district. The BJP won 53 seats, JD(S)—15 and KJP— 6. As many as 18 independent candidates were elected.
While the BJP won with a clear majority in Chikmagalur CMC, Sringeri TP and Koppa TP, the Congress got a clear majority in Kadur TMC. No party got a clear majority in Birur TMC, Mudigere, Tarikere and N R Pura TPs.
Out of 35 seats in Chikmagalur CMC, the BJP won 18 seats, while the Congress won 10 seats, JD(S) two seats and Independents secured five.
In the 23-seat Tarikere TMC, the Congress has won 10 seats, while the Independents have won nine seats. The JD(S) and the KJP have managed to secure two seats each.
Similarly, in the 11-seat Mudigere TP, BJP and Congress won five seats each, while an Independent candidate won the other seat.
In Kodagu
Out of the 40 seats of the three ULBs in Kodagu district, the BJP managed to secure 19 seats, while the Congress bagged eight seats. JD(S) won in 11 seats and two seats went to independents.
While BJP managed to a get clear majority in Virajpet Town Panchayat, in Somwarpet and Kushalnagar TPs, no party could get a clear majority.
